CALL FOR SCORES

Emerging Composers Workshop, Spring 2024

San Diego New Music invites composers to attend the Emerging Composers Workshop of Spring 2024. In this program, students will participate in a three-part Seminar with San Diego State University music composition and theory professor, Dr. Texu Kim. The workshop will culminate in a public reading session of new works by selected high school students on Wednesday, May 1 at the Athenaeum Art Center at Bread and Salt.

This workshop is free to attend.

Seminar Dates: 6-8pm at SDSU
April 10
April 17
April 24

Public Reading: May 1 – 7:30pm, Athenaeum Arts Center at Bread and Salt

To be considered for the Public Reading Session:

1. Participants must be enrolled in high school in San Diego County
2. Submit one representative work including a score and, if available, a recording by April 1, 2024
3. Submit a statement demonstrating eligibility and interest in the workshop, including which school they currently attend
4. Submit a brief recommendation from a music teacher or professional musician who knows of their work and ambition

EMERGING COMPOSERS COMMISSION COMPETITION

2021

CONGRATULATIONS to student composer Zane Shrem-Besnoy, winner of the 2021 Falk Prize!

Zane Shrem-Besnoy is a senior at the University of San Diego studying Music Composition and English. Zane has served the San Diego music community as a concert organizer, promoter, and sound engineer in the independent rock and folk scenes throughout high school and college. His compositions and songs can be found under the name Zane Alexander on Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp.

The selection committee chose his composition Sagitta for solo clarinet as the winning selection of the 2021 Call for Scores. The work will be presented on a Digital Dose concert during the 2020-21 concert season.

The Falk Prize is sponsored by a generous contribution from Julia S. Falk, Ph.D.
