2024 EMERGING COMPOSERS COMMISSION COMPETITION

San Diego New Music invites emerging San Diego/Tijuana/Ensenada-based composers to apply for the Emerging Composers Commission Competition , an opportunity to compose an original work for our annual Emerging Composers Concert. The concert will take place at the Athenaeum Art Center Studios at Bread & Salt on August 14, 2024.

Eligibility

Students must be:

  1. Enrolled in a university of college at the undergraduate level in San Diego County, Tijiuana, or Ensenada, or
  2. Enrolled at the undergraduate level elsewhere, having graduated from a high school in San Diego County, Tijiuana, or Ensenada
  3. Current students or recent student (as of Spring 2024)

Process:

  1. Submit 1-2 representative work(s) including a score and, if available, a recording, by June 15, 2024.
  2. Include a brief statement (1-2 pages) that describes the applicant’s eligibility,and provide information about the applicant’s current undergraduate program and the high school from which the applicant has graduated.
  3. Selected composers will be asked to compose a new piece within an instrumentation to be determined shortly.
  4. All scores and parts will be due by July 17, 2024.
  5. Rehearsals will take place within approximately one week before the concert. Commissioned Composers must be able to attend the performance on August 14, 2024.
  6. Commissioned composers will have the opportunity to work with the performers during the rehearsal process, and will receive a premiere performance on the Emerging Composers Concert, a professional recording of the performance, and a $150 commission fee upon completion of score and parts.
  7. All submissions should be sent to ericstarr@sandiegonewmusic.com.

 

2023

2021

CONGRATULATIONS to student composer Zane Shrem-Besnoy, winner of the 2021 Falk Prize!

Zane Shrem-Besnoy is a senior at the University of San Diego studying Music Composition and English. Zane has served the San Diego music community as a concert organizer, promoter, and sound engineer in the independent rock and folk scenes throughout high school and college. His compositions and songs can be found under the name Zane Alexander on Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp.

The selection committee chose his composition Sagitta for solo clarinet as the winning selection of the 2021 Call for Scores. The work will be presented on a Digital Dose concert during the 2020-21 concert season.

The Falk Prize is sponsored by a generous contribution from Julia S. Falk, Ph.D.
