2025 Emerging Composers Commission Competition

San Diego New Music invites emerging San Diego/Tijuana/Ensenada-based composers to apply for the Emerging Composers Commission Competition, an opportunity to compose an original work for our annual Emerging Composers Concert. The concert will take place at the Athenaeum Art Center (1955 Julian Ave., San Diego) on August 11, 2025.

Eligibility:
Students must be:

  1. Enrolled in a university or college at the undergraduate level in San Diego County, Tijuana, or Ensenada.
  2. Enrolled at the undergraduate level elsewhere, having graduated from a high school in San Diego County, Tijuana, or Ensenada;
  3. Current students or recent (Spring 2025).

Process:

  1. Submit 1-2 representative work(s) including a score and, if available, a recording, by June 16, 2025
  2. Include a brief statement (1-2 pages) that describes the applicant’s eligibility, and provide information about the applicant’s current undergraduate program and the high school from which the applicant has graduated.
  3. Selected composers will be asked to compose a new piece within an instrumentation to be determined shortly.
  4. All scores and parts will be due by July 21, 2025
  5. Rehearsals will take place within approximately one week before the concert. Commissioned Composers must be able to attend the performance on August 11, 2025
  6. Commissioned composers will have the opportunity to work with the performers during the rehearsal process, and will receive a premiere performance on the Emerging Composers Concert, a professional recording of the performance, and a $150 commission fee upon completion of score and parts.
