MISSION
San Diego New Music is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the public performance of notated music of the highest integrity and artistic caliber from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. We seek to advance the art form by promoting music composed with conceptual rigor, passionate energy, and singular artistic vision. SDNM enriches the artistic culture of San Diego through the presentation of an annual concert series and the soundON Festival of Modern Music, and through fostering its resident performing ensemble, NOISE.
CONCERT SERIES
We offer an annual concert series featuring performances of 20th- and 21st-Century music by our affiliated artists, who are expert performers from the San Diego community, and by guest artists. Our primary venue is the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, a beautiful and intimate space ideally suited to the presentation of chamber music.
NOISE
NOISE is an ensemble of accomplished soloists with a deep commitment to chamber music. NOISE is the ensemble-in-residence with San Diego New Music. NOISE presents worldwide that are energetic and engaging as well as intellectually stimulating and technically sophisticated. We believe that music which is sometimes called complex, difficult, or avant-garde is accessible to any audience when performed with passion and conviction. The repertoire of NOISE is focused on three artistic trajectories, their histories, and their intersections:
1. new complexity and threshold performative challenges
2. high-intensity grooves and minimalism
3. imaginative textures and soundscapes
Our vision for NOISE is to develop new repertoire through collaboration with an ever widening pool of composers, both established and emerging, through residencies across the United States and internationally, and to professionally record the repertoire of composers to whose work we are particularly committed.
The soundON Festival of Modern Music
With the presentation of the soundON Festival of Modern Music, we strive to bring outstanding repertoire to a diverse audience through a variety of events and formats. Combining roundtable discussions, workshops for non-musicians and students, open rehearsals, and concerts, the Festival provides ample opportunities for our audiences to interact with composers and performers in a variety of settings. The Festival brings together the repertoire of NOISE with works presented by world-class guest artists and works solicited through an annual international call for scores.
Our vision for the festival is to continue to present the highest-caliber of artistic work and to reach out to young artists and audiences through interactive workshops that will build a new generation of new music supporters and artists. We intend to commission composers of international significance and to implement a second annual Festival event on the east coast |
